Traveling Tips (for first time travelers visit China)

1. Get your VISA

There are many VISA-free countries to visit China including France, Germany, Italy, Netherland, Spain, Malaysia etc. To make sure if you need a VISA application in advance, visit the official website:

https://cova.mfa.gov.cn/qzCoCommonController.do?show&pageId=index&locale=en_US

2. Choose your flight (and destination airport)

There are two international airports in Beijing.

  • The PEK (Beijing Capital International Airport) is the one pretty close to the event address (10km and roughly 15 min drive).
  • The PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport) is 74km away from the event address, the taxi rate is roughly 200 to 300 CNY.

3. Hotels

The accommodation cost in Beijing is much lower than most western countries and Singapore (usually 1/2 to even 1/4). You can easily find many international hotels near the Beijing Capital Airport.

Be careful: there are low-cost hostels near the racetrack (you can find them on Agoda.com) but all of them cannot accommodate foreigners.

If you want to stay at a ‘metropolitan neighborhood’, Wangjing area (望京, inside the northern-east 5th ring) is the closest downtown area.

4. Prepare your data roaming (and VPN)

Check with your cell phone carrier to understand the charges for data use, phone calls, and text messaging while abroad.

  • Keep in mind that not all networks provide roaming service in China, so verify this before your trip.
  • With data roaming, you can visit all international services, without any restrictions from the notorious Great Fire Wall.
  • If you use a local sim card or local WiFi here, you need a VPN service to connect to many abroad websites including Google, Facebook etc.

5. Setup your WeChat Pay

  • If you only plan to stay one or two nights in China, Cash and credit card (VISA, MasterCard) is enough.
  • If you plan to stay a few more days and walk/skate/mess around in Beijing, WeChat and WeChat pay is highly recommended. There are many how-to videos online about sign-up WeChat account and setup WeChat pay.

6. MISC

  • Please don’t discuss political issues at the event. Most Chinese are quite open for discussion (with diff political views of course), you can have private chats with them.
  • If you have any question at the event, feel free to ask volunteers (in colored vest) and longboarders, although not all of them speek English, they’ll happy to help.
